Mission and Vision Statement

The mission of Contingency Academy, Inc. is to provide educational opportunities for low-income and underserved children and young adults in the Dominican Republic. We aspire to create a transformational educational experience, be a national leader in developing career-ready citizens and create lifelong learners.

Background: According to the nonprofit, Our World in Data, there are still significant inequalities in the amount of education children get across the world. This can be measured as the total number of years that children spend in school. However, researchers can also adjust for the quality of education to estimate how many years of quality learning they receive. This is done using an indicator called learning-adjusted years of schooling. Learning-adjusted years (LAYS) is computed by adjusting the expected school years based on the quality of learning, as measured by the harmonized test scores from various international student achievement testing programs. The learning-adjusted years scores of the Dominican Republic are significantly lower than other nations in North America and Central America. For example, Canada has a learning-adjusted years score of 11.7 years, the United States, 10.6 years, Costa Rica, 9 years, and Mexico, 8.8 years. The learning-adjusted years score for children in the Dominican Republic is 6.6 years.

Sixty-four (64) percent of secondary school-aged children in the Dominican Republic drop out of school before graduating. Few children have access to computers, leaving the vast majority of children and young adults computer illiterate. The Contingency Academy, Inc. aims to reverse these trends by offering children and young adults the opportunity to develop into career-ready citizens by offering language and computer literacy classes and after school programs for school-aged youth.
The program will be delivered in person and will initially operate in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Contingency Academy aspires to create a transformative educational experience, be a national leader in developing career-ready citizens and lifelong learners.
